Location: Project-based throughout Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties

Employment Type: Per project / Full-Time

AKM Consulting Engineers (AKM) specializes in providing engineering and related services to public agencies. The scope of services offered by AKM includes all facets of planning, design and construction management for public works infrastructure.

AKM is seeking qualified professional construction inspectors to serve on a per project basis in support of water, wastewater, recycled water, stormwater and street improvement projects. Typical assignments include pipelines, pump stations, treatment facilities, reservoirs, and street repair projects for public agencies located in Orange, Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. We’re looking for highly motivated, detail-oriented individuals who value integrity, responsiveness, and deliver outstanding client service.

General Expectations

  • Maintain professionalism while working with clients, contractors, and AKM team members at all times.
  • Utilize excellent communication skills to regularly report project status to the client, both verbally and in writing.
  • Submit and discuss a weekly project progress report to the AKM Project Manager. 
  • Be proactive in resolving problems during a project, objectively communicating the issues to the client and AKM Project Manager, and proposing initial solutions and action plans.
  • Act in the best interest of the client and project at all times.
  • Perform all duties with honesty, integrity and loyalty to the client, AKM, and the project.
  • Be responsive to all project participants.
  • Perform all services within contractual scope of work at all times.
  • Enforce the project’s contract documents at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain the established project document control and filing system.
  • Manage submittals and RFIs – file, log, distribute, track review deadlines, and return responses to contractors.
  • Perform detailed daily inspections to verify compliance with contract documents.
  • Prepare detailed daily inspection reports with photo documentation to client and AKM Project Manager.
  • Coordinate with AKM subconsultants (e.g., geotechnical materials testing, corrosion specialists and surveyors) as needed.
  • Conduct pre-construction and progress meetings, including agendas and meeting minutes.
  • Maintain as-built drawings throughout construction and review weekly with contractors. 
  • Review and discuss change order requests from contractor with AKM Project Manager. Provide recommendations for action based on the project contract documents. Respond to contractor based on written client direction. Keep detailed accounting records of work performed under force account. 
  • Maintain a weekly assessment of project working days and transmit to contractor. 
  • Receive and review progress schedules, including 2-week look-ahead and CPM schedules. Provide comments to the client. Track contractor’s progress against baseline CPM schedule.
  • Review payment quantities with contractor on a periodic basis Provide payment recommendation amounts to client. 
  • Maintain project punch lists and corrections throughout construction. Distribute to contractor and client. 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of construction inspection experience on municipal projects (e.g., water, wastewater, recycled water, stormwater and street improvements). 
  • High school diploma required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • APWA Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector (CPII) certification preferred.
  • Proficiency with Primavera, Microsoft Project, and cloud-based project/construction management systems and software preferred. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management abilities.
  • Valid CA driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites.
